Most of us unconsciously assume and conclude that the moment someone is charged with a criminal charge in court, means that the person is malicious and harbours ill intent, even more when it comes to cabbies being apprehended for traffic offences.
Sweeping statements are made, by many, myself included, that cabbies are little dickheads that drive with such recklessness which jeopardises the safety of other road users.
Well today, i headed to the subordinate courts (my first time inside) to report on the verdict of the cabbie who drove and hit a 30 year old guy in april at scotts road.
It was my first time being assigned to a crime story, and i must admit that it was pretty unnerving as i prepared my sinister sneer and ran through martial art routines in my head. Now this is only because i've been told stories about how reporters and videographers get curses at and even physically assualted by the accused and their families.
When we spotted the accused from a far, it was basically 'grab-cam-aim-and-get-ready-to shoot' mode.
The 60 plus year old man, who really looked much older than his age, strutted casually with slouched shoulders, as he past me, he looked right into the view finder of my camera and forced out a meek but warm smile. No sign of any resistance to being caught on video, no uttering of curses at us.
I think a part of myself felt pity for this old dude, having been driving a cab to put two sons through university, one even to a masters, he had to get into such an accident just as he was about to retire. Imagine working hard all your life, and then finally being able to bear the fruits of your harvest, but you end up getting sent to jail for a moment of folly, which he said was incited because he was scolded and threatened by the victim whom he suspected had been under the influence at the point of the incident.
And i thought it amiable of him to even stop for interviews with the press and also chattered with us, thanking us for asking him questions. About the gratitude from him, i still cant comprehend why would he keep thanking us for asking him questions. Rather amusing.
But the main point of this post?
I think my whole perception of things slowly changes every single day i spend in my company, the tendency to view things in a wider perspective rather than how the gatekeepers choose to deliver the story to you is really one of the perks in this job.
